Caddy Shack Square, Kelleys Island, Ohio 43438

Recruiting employees (J-1 Visa and local) for 2012 summer season

ALL POSITIONS REQUIRE WORKING EVERY WEEKEND WITHOUT EXCEPTION FROM MEMORIAL THROUGH LABOR DAYS

PAY RATE AND HOUSING

Note:
Understand that this position is located on a small island in Ohio (one of the Great Lakes) and is not a big city or near a big city and has "safety's" in the contract for applicants that want to use it as a stepping stone to get somewhere else.
Since we are a small company, we cannot afford to be used for such things and it can potentially have a big impact on the company. We have hired and enjoyed the foreign students for 10+ years, but currently, we are having second thoughts about hiring outside the US because, lately we have had these issues and have no tolerance for it. And along with the high unemployment here, US employees are readily available and willing to work. Please read the job description page thoroughly so that you understand what you are getting into. It is a great place to meet other foreign students and experience a small town atmosphere in the US which is quite the opposite from a big city or even mid sized city atmosphere. Good Luck with your decision.

NOW HIRING FOR SUMMER SEASONAL RETAIL JOB DESCRIPTION:

DATES: mid May to mid September ( minimal working schedule from before Memorial Day through after Labor Day)

Positions vary, and may be rotated or fit to the student at our discretion.

All position are service oriented and require sales / selling and speaking with the customer and cleaning the area.

Some positions require some physical labor and others require food handling.

Some positions are located in open air, others are located indoors. One position requires drivers license.

Some duties could include: watering plants, vaccuming/moping or sweeping the floor, washing windows, cleaning the area bathroom, periodic display window decorating for clothing store, spray painting stencils on the sidewalk, organizing rental golf carts, folding and straightening clothes.

Booga Shack Stores: you will be responsible for the general operation of the shop, from opening to closing, cleaning everyday, folding shirts constantly throughout the day and during slow periods and keeping the product orderly, restocked and neatly presented, watering plants, emptying trash, keeping the bathroom clean, vaccuming daily among other duties.

Showing up for work bright eyed, fresh and enthusiastic to work, generally you will work all day without official break and will need to prepare and bring your lunch with you and eat during slow periods throughout the day. You may be given 1-2 day(s) a week off per week before 3rd week in June and August after 3rd week. July, you will be required to work everyday, (unless you are willing to take less hours all season). Any unscheduled requested time off will need a 2 week notice and approval. There will be no approved time off on any Holidays, Weekends, Festivals or potential busy times in July. Generally Mon, Tue, or Wed are approved days to have off before 3rd week in June and after 3rd week of August.

Personality needed: Outgoing personality, able to move quickly to accomplish a task, helpful to other co-workers and customers, interested in people, willing to do all the required tasks including folding, straightening, cleaning and regular upkeep of their area. Someone with good observations skills and able to take the initiative to make a sale or improve the area. The ability to multitasking is of great benefit as you generally work alone and can be accomplishing several things at once along with greeting the customer, etc.

This is a great opportunity for you to think of our shop as you would if you owned it, take pride in the way it looks, how it operates and notice the tourist traffic and trends, listen & question the customers (watch what they buy, why, how they move through the store, etc.) and implement changes to improve sales or tourist flow which you can control and watch the results. This makes it a learning experience also for you.

Generally you should be moving all the time with some duty, either selling, cashiering, cleaning the shop/shelves/floor/sunglasses/displays/entrance area/cleaning jewelry, keeping list of things that need to be ordered or are in low supplies, including supplies (shopping bags, register/calculator paper, price stickers etc) and/or checking everything over and over. You should not have time to sit down, everything should be in the best of shape. As the manager, I am usually able to find something that is needing to be done, it would be your job to see that I do not find one thing and better yet, think of things that I have not.

My best employee taught me several things and she had never worked before in her life, she had a great perspective, always had a smile, was helpful, had a delightful attitude/demeanor and lovely personality. She never sat down, I never saw her eating or vacuuming the floor, however I am sure she ate and the floor was always immaculate, she stood straight and tall, always made her presence known to the customers, never leaned on things when she stood in place, and had better customer relations than I. She kept the shop spotless and more organized than even I had ever seen it. She was the first and only employee to receive several bonuses. She made my life easy, even found my keys when I lost them. We hired her the next year and gave her a raise, something that is not common in our business.

Island Info:

Your Arrival: (please print this section to take with you on your trip)
Most students take the Greyhound Bus (http://www.greyhound.com) from their Airport city (is not usually located at the Airport so do some research on transportation from Airport to Bus Station) to Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Make arrangements to arrive at the Greyhound bus station in Sandusky, Ohio in the morning or early afternoon (there is no one in the bus station after 4 or 5 pm and it is out in the middle of nowhere, also there is no way to get to the island as the ferry stops running in the early evening - Mon-Wed are best days to arrive on the island).

From the Greyhound, you can call Dependable Shuttle taxi service at (419) 621-1016 (I think it is $8.00+ per person in 2007, you can call them to get pricing) if you are early enough it is best to ask them to take you to the Social Security Administration (Social Security Administration address: 252 Wayne St., (downtown) Sandusky, OH 44870-2810, Phone: (419) 625-6052) if needed and make arrangement to have him pick you up again (your next stop is the Jet Express Ferry (http://www.jet-express.com/schedulesSAN2007.html), in Downtown Sandusky (appx .3 mi from the Social Security Administration Office of which you can walk, luggage permitting) and buy a ticket ($14 in 2009, but check their website yourself and plan on a few dollars more as every year it can be a little more expense, then you will have enough money to get to the island) to Kelleys Island (appx 1/2 hour ride). From the arrival dock at Kelleys Island, you walk straight up the street, approximately 100 yards to Caddy Shack Square on the left (just passed the corner to where the mini golf is located). Pat is usually found in the Beach Rack or Booga Shack located in Caddy Shack Square, if not, introduce yourself as one of the foreign students coming to work and ask them to contact her or Danny.

Be sure to contact the Jet Express if you are arriving early in the season, their schedule is minimal or not available during the weekdays and shortened on the weekends and you will need to take the Kelley Island Ferry Boat from Marblehead, Ohio (http://www.kelleysislandferry.com) Please check their schedule also, they may have a shortened schedule also.

Note: if you do NOT complete your social security before your arrival to the island, you will have to pay to return to the mainland by ferry on another day. We prefer you apply for your social security before coming to the island to save expenses and time.

Local phone number is 419-746-2808 (store), 419-746-2221(home) 954-330-9425 (cell) email: boogannex@gmail.com. Please check all this information with the web addresses provided for updated schedules and pricing as it probably has changed and can vary different months of the summer.

Be prepared: most student find the island somewhat quiet when they first arrive because it is early in the season and not a lot of tourist traffic and cannot imagine it will change. This is a good time to explore the island, read a book, hike, etc when you are off work. When the season arrives it is a different atmosphere and students seem to thoroughly enjoy their job choice. Most students have the desire to return, and do, if they are able. There are a few night spots for either live music or DJ on weekend nights. The Caddy Shack usually has a variety of outdoor live entertainment or Karaoke on weekends.

Begin Work:

We expect you to REST before you begin work. Travel is hard on your body, and

we would like you to look around and get familiar with the Island also.

Most students are eager to begin the day after arrival or the 2nd day, it is your choice if you arrive Mon-Wed. If you arrive Thurs-Sun, most likely you will work the next day. We also expect that you are rested everyday that you work and are alert to effectively handle the day's work with enthusiasm. We do our best to keep students working even during slow period as a courtesy, however if we do not NEED a student to work and the student continually arrives sluggish or unenthusiastic to work, we reserve the option to cut their hours during these times or find another suitable employee to replace the original employee. We are looking for pleasant, outgoing, friendly, happy, respectful, helpful, enthusiastic, accommodating, enjoyable employees interested in more than just a paycheck.

Internet Access / Phone:

Internet access with limited hour / days is available at the Library about 1 mile away from your dorm. If you have your own wireless computer, there are usually a few access points in town. Note: Computers are not permitted at the workplace as we find they are distracting to the employee's main function which is to maintain the shop and be attentive to customers.

There are no pay phones on the island. Phone cards from New York and other areas usually work but the time goes MUCH faster because you are calling from Ohio and not the city you bought them, be careful of the rules when you get them. 2 hour card can be 10 minutes or less on the island and every time you try to connect you are charged. Email is the preferred method of international communication.

If this sounds good to you, I can assure you, you will love the island and it will love you!
